Pile Cap Design
The Pile cap Design module enables the detailed design of reinforced concrete pile caps. The Pilecap Design module simplifies the analysis and detailing of pile caps, improving both accuracy and efficiency within the foundation design workflow.
With this module, users can:
- Define pile arrangements and column geometry
- Apply and transfer loads from the superstructure
- Assess strut and tie behaviour within the pile cap
- Design and review reinforcement requirements
In this tutorial, we will focus on a 3 piled pile cap example. However, the same principles and steps outlined can be applied to more complex pile cap configurations and foundation layouts.
Step 1: Access the pile cap design module
- Within MasterFrame, open the Pile Cap Design module.
- This is usually found within the Design menu or within the Integrated Design components.
- The program will import the calculated ultimate axial loads and moments, or reactions, from the MasterFrame analysis for the selected column base.

The program imports the calculated ultimate axial loads and moments (reactions) from the MasterFrame analysis for the selected column base.
Step 2: Input the pile data
- Enter the capacity and loading parameters of the pile under📄 Pile Capacity and Loading tab.
- Input the pile diameter, spacing rules, and the safe working load capacity of the piles.
- For this example:
pile diameter = 300 mm
working load = 600 kN
These values may vary depending on the geotechnical data for the site.

Step 3: Enter the column and pile cap data
- Under the 📄 Briefs and Pile Head Dimensions tab enter the column data and pile cap depth.
- Choose the required design code and scheduling code.

Step 4: Define the reinforcement details
- In the 📄 Main Reinforcement tab, define:
concrete grade
steel grade
minimum bar gap
concrete cover
pile overhang
- Enter the bar diameter in the X direction and Y direction.
- Enter the required bar spacing in each direction.

Step 5: Define any additional reinforcement
Open the 📄 Additional Reinforcement tab.
Use this section to define any extra reinforcement requirements, including:
side bars
top steel
cage reinforcement
alternative bottom bar

Step 6: Select the design method
- Choose the required 📄 Design Method for the pile cap.
- For a 3 pile pile cap, select the Strut and Tie method.
Step 7: Review the design results
- The calculation output will show white when the design passes.
- It will show cyan when the design fails.
