Wind Loading on Cylinders

⚠️

Under Construction

MasterFrame models the physical geometry of a circle using linear segments, the MasterKey: Wind Analysis module treats the structure as a curved surface for load application. The software includes a specific algorithm for curved structures that calculates coefficients (Cp) based on the varying slope and orientation of the segments relative to the wind direction.

MasterSeries does not directly implement the provisions for cylindrical structures given in EN 1991-1-4:2005, Section 7.9. Instead, wind loading on cylinders is treated using an alternative, established approach based on polygonal-plan buildings.

Adopted Methodology

Cylindrical structures are modelled as polygonal-plan buildings in accordance with BS 6399-2:1997, Clause 3.3.1.2 (refer to Figure 30). This approach approximates the curved surface of a cylinder using a series of flat facets.

External Pressure Coefficients

  • External pressure coefficients (Cpe values) are taken from Table 26 of BS 6399-2:1997.

  • These values are further modified using Table 27 to account for:

    • Wall angle effects
    • Interaction between adjacent faces of the polygon

Accessing External Pressure Coefficients in MasterSeries

To view the applied external pressure coefficients (Cpe values), navigate to the Wind Load tab, select the Wind icon, and then click on Coef Values.
