Streamlined Project Workflow: Integrating Analysis and Design Management
This guidance note details how the MasterRC Pile Cap Design module streamlines the structural engineering workflow by offering deep integration with the 3D model and powerful tools for project management, load analysis, and design iteration.
A. Integrated and Standalone Flexibility
The MasterRC Pile Cap Design module is offered as a standalone module and is also built to integrate seamlessly with the Building Design Suite, PowerPad, and MasterPort analysis packages.
- Integrated Design: When used with the 3D structural model (MasterFrame), geometry properties and forces are seamlessly transferred from the analysis model. This integration provides maximum speed, economy, and accuracy.
- Standalone Use: If the pile cap is designed independently, the user can input axial forces and bending moments in two directions directly into the module.
- Interactive Design: Regardless of whether it is standalone or integrated, the program is interactive: as the input data is altered, the calculations and graphics update immediately.
B. Advanced Load Handling and Critical Case Identification
The software handles complex and realistic load scenarios efficiently, ensuring the design is governed by the most critical forces derived from the structural model.
- Bi-Axial Moments and Eccentricity: The module is designed to handle bi-axially loaded, eccentric pile caps. Users can define the column centroid's position by specifying an Offset X and Offset Y relative to the centre of the pile cap.
- Load Case Integration: In the integrated design module, the design is linked to the ultimate limit state load cases already established in the full MasterFrame analysis.
- Scanning for Critical Loads: A key feature is the ability to "Scan for critical loadcase". This function identifies the critical load case necessary for the pile cap design, which can be run either for the current pile design brief or for all design briefs currently applied in the model.
- Orientation Management: To correctly align the forces from the analysis model with the pile cap geometry, the integrated module allows the user to rotate the pile cap by selecting an orientation in degrees.
C. Efficient Design Management via Briefs
The use of "design briefs" allows engineers to manage multiple unique pile cap designs within a single project file, enhancing organizational efficiency and documentation.
- Managing Multiple Designs: Several pile caps (briefs) can be contained within one file. This means all pile caps for one project can be easily managed.
Brief Operations: Users can define a title for each brief and access management functions, including:
- Adding a new brief (using the $\text{+ icon}$ or menu option).
- Deleting an existing design brief (using the scissors icon).
- Navigating through the briefs using directional arrows or by dropping down the list.
- Sorting the briefs alphabetically or dragging them to reorder them in a list view.
- The ability to copy the current brief to the clipboard and paste it, enabling rapid design iteration or application to similar locations.
- Single Project Scheduling: A significant workflow advantage is that if all pile caps in a project are saved in the same file, a single schedule will be created for all the caps, with the bars being rationalised.
The file management system acts like a digital binder for the entire foundation design of a project. Instead of creating individual files for every unique pile cap, the engineer keeps all designs (briefs) together. This centralized approach guarantees that when a final bar bending schedule is generated, the reinforcement across all pile caps is automatically examined and rationalized into a single, comprehensive document, ensuring consistency and material efficiency.
